Aaron Chang Inspiring Photographer Research Paper
One of the most inspiring Surf Photographers in San Diego is Aaron Chang. He is an award winning internationally acclaimed artist whose fine art photography has a large fan base. I was first introduced to him at the grand opening of his Solana Beach Art Studio. He is inspired by the beauty of San Diego and the world.
A few times in summer, a tropical flow moves through San Diego from hurricanes coming off the coast of Baja. The result is an unusually thick humidity (even for San Diego) and really interesting cloud formations are created that are great to photograph. These cloud formations cause major rain in the deserts. When the storm gets to the coast the clouds break up, creating great opportunities for spectacular sunsets around San Diego.
Aaron says that for years people have been requesting him to photograph the Batiquitos Lagoon in Carlsbad. A place where I have hiked with my family. There are walking trails around the lagoon, which changes daily based on the tide. The changes make this location interesting to photograph at different times of the day. High tide at sunset is best to reflect the sunset in the lagoon. Aaron gives some suggestions on special local San Diego locations for your best Photography. 1. Aaron loves that Torrey pine trees silhouetted against the setting sun. As you may know Torrey pines are very special trees to San Diegans. They are an endangered species that only grows in Torrey Pines State Park and the Channel Islands. 2. Photograph when the water is lit with the colors of the sky. 3. Photograph when the cloud formation arch over the trees which creates a magic photographing opportunity.
I also have known about Aaron Chang’s work in the surf industry, from my Uncle who is a Pro Surfer from Northern California and he has been photographed by most of the top Surf Photographers in the industry. “People always ask me who the best surf and ocean photographer is.” Says Surfer Magazine Photo Editor Jeff Devine, “and I’ve always said it is Aaron Chang.”
Aaron Chang Ocean Art Gallery in Solana Beach is the flagship gallery. The iconic gallery draws locals and visiting travelers. The Solana Beach art gallery features Aaron's large format photographic prints with surf and ocean themes. All of his work is available in custom sizes. The cool thing about Aaron's photography is that you can buy a tiny art piece for 100.00, so even I can start an Aaron Chang art collection. I like to visit his gallery and just appreciate and get inspired by his amazing photography.
I have researched some interesting facts about Aaron’s background and what had led to his artistic success. Aaron was born August 9th,1956 in Tucson Arizona. Aaron was the oldest out of two siblings. While growing up his father Howard Chang was a math teacher he then taught Aaron how to take photos when he was nine years old, so very young in my opinion to learn how to take photos. Then when Aaron was eleven years old his family moved and relocated to Imperial Beach in San Diego. I bet they were happy that they moved by the ocean. Then in high school he was on the swim team and he also surfed a lot. Also he worked in the laboratory at his high school developing photos. Aaron went to the same high school where his dad taught math. Then he graduated in 1974 and moved to Oahu where he decided not to attend college.
He started off working at the Royal Hawaiian hotel taking photos of the boat cruises, luaus, and tourist. Then later on he moved to the North Shore and was taking photos and making postcards. Well he got into photography when he was nine when his dad taught him and he has loved it ever since. Then in 1979 Chang was put on the staff for Surfer Magazine exclusively taking photos for them.
Aaron loved taking photos of surfers and sunsets. He used the ultra wide angle lens and would get photos of perfect barrels of waves in the 1980s when no one else was doing that. Aaron worked for Surfer Magazine for 25 years and he had 38 different magazine covers throughout his career working at Surfer Magazine. He was the first person to get an open wave shot with no one in it. Then he traveled to more than 50 countries, taking photos and becoming a top photojournalist. Also his work was in sports illustrated, GQ, People, and US weekly. He was rated as the top 5 sports photographer by American photographer in 1985. In 1994 he launched his own clothing line. My mom has seen his clothing line at the San Diego Convention center ASR (Action Sports) Trade show. His work has also been featured in the San Diego Natural History Museum.
Aaron owns two amazing galleries in San Diego one is downtown and the other is in Solana Beach. They might open up another gallery too. Aaron says his most exciting work is his 20 foot surfboard sculpture with 65 different used surfboards it was in a shopping mall somewhere in the US. Now he is into taking photos for commercial development companies.
I think Aaron Chang is an excellent photographer and I will continue to visit his gallery in Solana beach with friends and family. I also really like how he takes most of his photos of waves in San Diego, where I live at the same beaches I go to weekly for inspiration and fun. I would like to learn a little more about Aaron Chang and his techniques. I really can relate to and support Aaron's Ocean Art Galleries vision, "Through art, we will contribute, in a positive way, to the betterment of our culture and inspire our ocean minded community to appreciate the gift of life".
